About the Book
This work deals with early temple and sculptural art of the western and southwestern parts of the Odisha State, an Eastern Province of the Republic of India, which was considered since the time of Buddha, a sacred land. As it was lying on major trade routes connecting ancient Magadha with Daksinapatha or present South India it drew the attention of Samrat Ashoka of the mighty Mauryas of Pataliputra in the third century B.C. The western part of Odisha, being mostly hilly forest land and inhabited by the tribes, it was not conquered by Ashoka, who has termed it as the land of Atavikas. In the fourth century A.D. Samrat Samudragupta during his military sojourn in Daksinapatha defeated two kings of this region, namely Vyaghraraja of Mahakantara and Mahendra of Kosala among twelve kings of Daksinapatha. As because the major trade routes were passing through this region connecting the Central India with the South and also Deccan, it brought economic prosperity to people of this vast tract, who were trading in gemstones, diamonds and forest products like wild animal skins, elephant tusks and other forest products.
This book contains chapters on the ancient temples and sculptural art of this region, which field of study was neglected by the historians and scholars for a pretty long time. It also contains a chapter recording in depth study and analysis of the interrelationship between Buddhism and the Cult of Jagannath, which was a subject of debate for a long time in the past. Publication of this book may throw new light on the evolution of temple architecture since the Gupta age in the fourth century A.D. in this region which after long experimentation for nearly six hundred years influenced the Silpins to establish a matured form called the Kalinga School by the tenth century A.D. after the occupation of the coastal tract of Odisha by the mighty Somavamsis of Daksina Kosala.
